INSIDE CREW CUTTERS

EP.00 - BEFORE THE FIRST CUT

When 15 Different Individuals Came Together as CREW CUTTERS

CREW CUTTERS, a team of 15 Thai jewelry designers, gemstone experts, and artisans competing in The Cut Reality, seen through Be’Shine’s journey.

A piece of jewelry may begin with a single line drawn on paper, an uncut gemstone waiting to reveal its brilliance, the practiced hands of a skilled artisan, or sometimes, simply with a small idea in someone’s mind. But bringing that idea to life as a finished piece of jewelry is rarely the work of one person alone. Behind every piece are those who envision its possibilities, those who shape the design, those who understand the materials, those who know how to cut a gemstone to reveal its finest qualities, those who master structure and production, and those who bring its story to life—helping others discover the value and meaning held within.

And perhaps, that is the closest way to describe what “CREW CUTTERS” truly means.

A team formed by 15 individuals, 15 areas of expertise, 15 different experiences, and 15 distinct ways of thinking. They did not begin by thinking alike. Instead, they had to learn how to bring those differences together and turn them into something they could create as one.

From people working within the same industry to becoming one team.

For Be’Shine, joining The Cut Reality was an experience unlike working within our own brand. Within Be’Shine, we are familiar with our own way of thinking, our own design language, and the processes we have developed over time. But becoming part of CREW CUTTERS meant stepping beyond that familiar world and learning to collaborate with entrepreneurs, designers, gemstone specialists, and artisans from a wide range of backgrounds.

Some excelled in design. Some understood gemstones in depth. Some brought strong expertise in production and craftsmanship. Some could envision the creative direction before anyone else, while others had the ability to take complex ideas and transform them into stories that people could understand and connect with.

What became most interesting, then, was not simply the question of “Who is good at what?”

It was something far more challenging:

When people with different strengths come together to create a single piece, how do we ensure that their expertise does not compete, but instead elevates one another?

15 PEOPLE, ONE CREW

CREW CUTTERS brought together 15 members from different brands, backgrounds, and areas of expertise across the gemstone and jewelry industry.

Although everyone came from the same industry, each person brought something distinctly different to the team.

Ik from Mahesak Gems took on the role of team leader, coordinating the group, overseeing the bigger picture, and helping all 15 members move forward in the same direction.

On the creative side, Arm from Charites Gems worked alongside Ji from Siamwell, shaping the team’s creative direction. Ji also played an important role in design development, from sketching ideas to evaluating the technical feasibility of each piece.

The Production team was responsible for turning ideas on paper into tangible pieces of jewelry. From CAD development and gemstone cutting to casting, stone setting, finishing, polishing, and plating, every stage required a different set of skills and close collaboration.

This process was brought to life by Praew from Minella, Boat from Luvia, Ji from Siamwell, Ponk from Ponk Smithi, Boat from SEWN Handicraft, and Ake from FINE, each contributing their expertise across different stages of production.

On the other side was the Presentation team, responsible for transforming a vast amount of information into clear visuals and compelling narratives that could be communicated within a limited amount of time.

The team included Mind and Nipun from Orithai, Mook and Pingpong from Pimrapha, and Tan, who worked together to shape complex ideas into presentations that were both visually engaging and easy to understand.

Oom from Be’Shine contributed to refining the presentation scripts, distilling the core idea behind each challenge, and shaping the overall content direction for the presentations.

And when it was time to bring those ideas to life in front of the judges, different members took turns representing the team on stage, including Mae from Morakot Gallery, Oom from Be’Shine, Mind, Nipun, and Ji.

In reality, however, the boundaries between these roles were never completely fixed.

In some challenges, someone from Production might contribute a creative idea.

Someone from the Presentation team might raise a question that reshaped the design. Someone working on the business or marketing side might need to return to the craftspeople and ask whether the story we wanted to tell could actually be brought to life.

This was never a team defined by “This is my job, and that is yours.”

Instead, everyone had to come together around one question:

“How can we make this the best it can possibly be with the time we have?”

CREATIVITY DOESN’T END WITH AN IDEA

One of the most important things we learned from working together was that a great creative idea alone is never enough to create a piece of jewelry.

The moment a line on a sketch has to become something real, an entirely new set of questions begins to emerge.

Can this gemstone actually be cut this way?Can this structure support the weight? How can this component be produced in practice? If the piece needs to be detachable, where should the mechanism be placed? Is this material suitable for contact with the skin? And even if all of these challenges can be solved, how do we communicate the story clearly within just a few minutes?

This is where creativity, design, gemstone knowledge, craftsmanship, engineering, production, business, and storytelling all have to come together.

And many times, the very “constraints” that first appeared to be obstacles became the catalyst for discovering new solutions—ideas that none of us had imagined at the beginning.

CUT THE FAKE, MAKE IT TRUE

For us, the name CREW CUTTERS came to mean much more than simply a group of people who “cut” gemstones.

Over time, it became a reflection of a team that learned to cut away what was unnecessary, cut through ideas that were still unclear, cut out what looked beautiful but could not be made, cut what no longer answered the brief, and sometimes, cut away our own egos—until what remained was something we could all believe was the best possible answer for the team at that moment.

CUT THE FAKE. MAKE IT TRUE.

It may sound like a simple phrase, but for 15 people working together, it came to mean something much deeper.

It meant having the courage to accept that the first idea does not have to be the best idea—and that the final creation does not have to belong to any one person.

FROM BE’SHINE’S PERSPECTIVE

What Be’Shine found most meaningful about this journey was not simply the opportunity to design jewelry in response to challenges we had never encountered before. It was the chance to witness, up close, what happens behind the scenes of the creative process.

We saw sketches revised again and again. Concepts questioned so deeply that we sometimes had to return to the very beginning. We saw seemingly ordinary materials become the starting point for unexpected ideas. And sometimes, a small thought from just one member, when developed and expanded by the other 14, could completely change the direction of an entire piece.

As a jewelry brand, this experience made us reconsider the meaning of craftsmanship from a much broader perspective.

Craftsmanship may not be defined solely by the mastery of the hands. It can also be found in the ability to think, listen, solve problems, compromise, experiment, and allow our own ideas to evolve when a better answer emerges.

BEFORE THE FIRST CUT

Before a gemstone can reveal its brilliance, a decision must first be made about how it should be cut. Before a piece of jewelry can come to life, it must pass through an idea, the hands of a craftsperson, and countless decisions along the way. And before CREW CUTTERS became the team you saw on The Cut Reality, we were simply 15 individuals with different experiences, different strengths, and different ways of thinking.

What gradually brought us together was not learning to think alike. It was learning when to stand by what we believed in, when to listen to someone who knew more than we did, and when to let go of our own ideas so that the team’s work could go further.

This was the beginning of CREW CUTTERS.

Before we take you behind the scenes of each challenge—how every idea was conceived, designed, tested, refined, and ultimately brought to life—we wanted to begin this series with the 15 people who made it all possible. Because in the end, behind every piece of jewelry you are about to see, there is more than a gemstone, a precious metal, or a design.

There are always people behind it.
